Recursion is a clinical-stage biotechnology company combining experimental biology and automation with artificial intelligence in a massively parallel system to efficiently discover potential drugs for diverse indications, including genetic disease, inflammation, immunology, and infectious disease. Recursion’s rich, relatable database of more than a petabyte of biological images generated in-house on the company’s robotics platform enables advanced machine learning approaches to reveal drug candidates, mechanisms of action, and potential toxicity, with the eventual goal of decoding biology and advancing new therapeutics to radically improve lives.

With four phase 2 ready assets and over two dozen discovery programs poised to enter the clinic this year, Recursion tapped Occam to recruit a Chief Medical Officer.

The CMO Search

An important reason for the company’s success thus far has been scrupulous attention to the wet science as well as computation. The company already has multiple programs in the clinic. Thus, Recursion seems to have made significant progress in cracking the code for automated drug discovery.

We were looking for a Chief Medical Officer of a most unusual sort. Recursion’s platform is disease state agnostic, although the early returns have come in orphan diseases and neurology/CNS disorders. We sought a clinical development polymath, somebody who is conversant with and comfortable in multiple indications. Furthermore, the charter involves recruiting and inspiring other talented medics to focus on specific disease state areas. So in addition to needing an intellectual adventurer, Occam also searched for an astute manager and leader. A tall order by any standard.

Ramona Doyle is a true left-brain-right-brain wonder. She is richly articulate, resolutely creative and unfailingly broad-minded. Her impressive career path has been defined by astute strategic choices and an overarching desire to care for patients.

With a background that includes basic research and clinical development in pulmonary disease, robust experience in organizing translational studies and designing clinical trials, Ramona is broad in her capabilities. Her rich and highly variegated history makes her an unconventional candidate, yet one well suited  to the uncommon and grand ambition of Recursion. This recovering English major and unlikely scientist is a Rhodes Scholar and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science by her alma mater this year.
